Dr. Shanley is a distinguished Society for Vascular Surgery fellow and a previous Health Policy and Management Scholar of the American College of Surgeons.  He served for over 10 years on the Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Healthcare Safety and Quality Improvement Research Study Section and the Circulatory Devices Advisory Panel at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  Dr Shanley’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.  He has over 100 publications, book chapters, funded research grants, patents, and numerous national and international invited presentations.  He is the past president of the Michigan Vascular Society and the Detroit Surgical Association.

Throughout his career, Dr Shanley has served in a variety of clinical and academic leadership roles including Chair of the Department of Surgery (William Beaumont, Royal Oak), Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery (Detroit Medical Center) and Residency Program Director for Vascular Surgery (Detroit Medical Center) and General Surgery (William Beaumont, Royal Oak).  Dr. Shanley also served in a variety of executive management roles including President & Chief Executive Officer, Wayne State University Physician Group; Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs, Wayne State University School of Medicine; Senior Vice President for Professional Services, Beaumont Health System; and Senior Vice President, Surgical Services, William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak.
