Abdominal Ultrasound Preparation Instructions
(Aorta, Iliac, Renal Artery, Mesenteric Artery, stenosis and aneurysm evaluation, Inferior Vena Cava and iliac vein evaluation)
To ensure accurate results, please follow the instructions below:
- Fasting (Required)
- Do not eat or drink for 8 hours prior to your appointment.
- This includes food, coffee, tea, gum, and smoking.
- Fasting reduces bowel gas and improves visualization of abdominal vessels.
- Medications
- You may take prescribed medications with a small sip of water, unless otherwise directed.
- If you are diabetic or require food with medication, please contact our office for guidance.
- Hydration
- Do not intentionally overhydrate before your exam.
- For most vascular abdominal studies, a full bladder is not required unless specifically instructed.
- Clothing
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- You may be asked to change into a gown for the exam or remove necessary articles of clothing to allow access for the exam.
- Arrival
- Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment.
- Bring your photo ID, insurance information, and any relevant requisition forms.
- Exam Duration
- Your study may take 45–75 minutes, depending on the number of vessels being evaluated:
- During the Exam
- The technologist will apply gel and use a handheld probe over your abdomen.
- You may be asked to hold your breath briefly or change positions to improve imaging.
- Important Notes
- Proper fasting is critical. Failure to follow instructions may result in a limited or rescheduled exam.
- If you are feeling unwell or unable to fast, please notify the clinic prior to your appointment.
